REVIEW

On GARDEN OF THE SENSES Carole enhances her uniquely poetic style with an exotic blend of rhythmic and instrumental influences from around the world. Co-produced by Simon Emmerson of Afro Celts fame, and working with many of the musicians she met at Peter Gabriel’s Recording Week, the result is a sensual treat for the ears! The songs are a laid out over a luxurious tapestry of sounds and chants which take us on a voyage from Brazil to Africa and beyond. She borrows from the cultures whose music she loves and gives back something which is reverently beautiful. The diversity of her approach, the graceful power of her lyrics, the arrangements and the production make GARDEN OF THE SENSES a stunning work of art! Through this enticing maze Caroles voice moves effortlessly. It’s the soulful voice of a woman who’s claimed her citizenship of the world. This is a CD you’ll dance to and equally one which offers some intimate and thoughtful moments. Travel with her on a global groove!

HOW GARDEN OF THE SENSES CAME ABOUT

Carole has recorded and performed with some of the most talented singers and musicians from the far corners of the earth: Baba Maal and Wasis Diop from Senegal, Jimmy M’baye, guitarist with Yousou N’dour, Hassan Hakmoud and Hossam Ramzy from Morocco and Egypt respectively, Kudsi Erguner from Turkey, Lukoa Kanza from the Congo, Amina Anabee from Tunisia, and Kasav from the Antilles Islands. Caroles participation at Peter Gabriel's Recording Week encouraged her to return to her natural love and instinct for World and roots music. It gave her the chance to work alongside the likes of Jane Siberry, Massive Attack, Daniel Lanois, Micheal Brooks, Billy Cobham and Nigel Kennedy. Following on from this , she co-wrote and performed 3 tracks with Billy Cobham on his album The Traveler. She also met Simon Emmerson, producer of the Afro Celts, and worked with him on several collaborations as featured artist and writer for Real World Records. Subsequently Simon co-produced her CD GARDEN OF THE SENSES.

CAROLE'S COMMENTS

Being at Peter Gabriel's studios for Recording Week in conjunction with the WOMAD festival was perhaps THE musical experience of a lifetime. Besides the great live gigs, imagine interacting in the studio with all these incredible musicians and producers from around the globe, each one bringing their own musical heritage to the mix. Creative bliss! There were moments in the studio when the only common language that was spoken was music. At the risk of sounding very 60's, it all went down in an atmosphere of brotherhood and sisterhood. Not to mention the fact that it was one long party! Sessions went on until 5 or 6 AM. Like most of us I hardly slept so I wouldn't miss anything! Peter's visionary approach in founding Real World Records is awesome. By allowing me to experience the scope of that vision at Recording Week a door of new possibilities was opened. I finally decided to write the music I'd wanted to record for years. A lot of the people I met at Peter's helped me do it… most importantly, my CO-producer, Simon Emmerson.
