REVIEW
At the risk of sounding obvious, ANGELS IN DISGUISE is heavenly. Strong song structure, memorable melodies, intelligent and sensitive lyrics plus the voice of an angel. OK, that last bit might sound a little over the top, but Carole's voice is surely one of the most beautiful around and this production has all the elements necessary to showcase her music at it's best. In keeping her team of musicians down to a minimum Carole leaves space for the elegant power of the songs themselves. From the haunting guitars of Patrice Tison to the kicking drum loops and solid groove of drummer Abe Laborial, with LA session player Jerry Watts on bass, the players serve her music well. The approach is perfect in its simplicity. With a slight touch of Joni Mitchell, a dose of Celtic flavor, (there's something of The Corrs in the first track….) and her usual pop songwriting talent, Carole's songs are refreshingly optimistic. I found myself pushing the repeat button on the CD player. ANGELS IN DISGUISE is a very personal and spiritual take on love that will inspire you to believe in the real thing.
CAROLE'S COMMENTS
In 1998 I changed my life… Radically! My music felt stagnant…. I guess it was your basic existential crisis on all fronts! So I sold everything and went to Africa for several months. Besides close encounters with Gorillas, Elephants and even a Hippo attack (!) I saw some of the most spectacular landscapes on earth, as well as the devastation of poverty and the Aids crisis first hand. I sang under the stars in the silence of the awe-inspiring desert. I sang for people of many different tribes and cultures who couldn't understand my language…. But who heard through it instead. With my voice a connection was made… to them, the earth, and myself. I remembered what it was that made me want to sing in the first place. Eureka!
So I went looking for a new approach to writing. I started playing the guitar and experimenting with open tunings. When I finally got the courage to play the new material to a "real" guitarist his reaction was a great confidence booster! I was constantly astounded by the support I got on this project, from the players to the owners of the best studios in Paris who gave me the recording time. Never has any production I've undertaken been so effortless….. Or so much fun. I was on a high the whole time, and I hear that in this music. Some people say they hear the Joni Mitchell influence others the Celtic influence. Me, I just loved the joy of the whole process. That's what I hear.
